The Finish
Despite its lustrous appearance, this finish is not thick. A thick fat finish would hinder and dampen the articulate response of the shell. “Clearcoat” a polyurethane without any tint or color is used, not lacquer.
I like this particular finish, because even though it is more complex and time-consuming to work with than Lacquer; The result is nothing short of stunning. It really just highlights the natural appearance of the wood. What is even more important is that it never crystallizes, dulls and degrades as Lacquer does over the years.
Furthermore, even though it offers lots of protection against ware and tear, it remains slightly flexible for years to come.
During the finish process, we spray and cut back until we have just covered the pores of the wood. The idea is to have a perfectly, smooth, even and flawless finish whilst ensuring we have the least amount of material on the instrument. The duration of this process alone takes about 2 to 3 weeks per instrument.
The Inlays
The inlays are the inlays and with that purely cosmetic. They neither add nor subtract from the sonic qualities of the instrument. The fit is so precise that when you run your hand over it with your eyes closed you will most likely miss them
They consist of Parrott feathers floated on Abalone shell and framed in African Ebony. A 3D picture Window is inlayed in to the instrument, which conforms to the same convex shape as the drum. It will look a little different from each angle because the feather float above the abalone and because of the shape and depth, they give you the feel that you can look around them....therefore the 3D effect.
I have developed this technique for many years and it is proprietary to Lunar Percussion. It is time consuming and tricky detail work with virtually 0 margin of error....micro woodworking. Because our Snares are individually hand constructed….No two inlays are ever the same.
OK I admit it…because of my persistent aversion to labels and the carp that I have had to endure because of that, I have chosen to counter the argument with an Inlay, which forms the visual signature of the instrument.
When the snare is set up on the kit and the horizontal Ebony inlay that marks the position of the strainer between your legs. The inlay window is visible in the from right side of the kit. ( right handed drummer set up), if you stand in front of it. Or if you prefer your strainer off to the side, they are visible from the front of the kit.
I love my beautiful feathered creature...
"Kasha" has been with ever since she was 8 months old for 11 years now. She eats drinks and sleeps with me and I have never kept her in a cage. I take her with me everywhere I can and through that hope to give her a diverse life worth living.
She loves the sound of machinery and sits on my kit appearing to be half asleep
whilst I beat the crap out of it.
She has has destroyed the insides of most of my cars or trucks, modified my tools and machinery, short circuited electrical outlets, moved on dangerously close to work on my computer and it would be impossible to count the pens, lighters, keys and all the shiny other objects that she has either stolen, hid and modified beyond recognition.
And find myself wondering on occasion why I continue to permit this to be a factor in the navigation of my everyday life. I love this self-righteous, hyper- intelligent, most extraordinarily beautiful feathered creature.
She is almost 3 ft from head to the end of the tail and sports quite a dress code. Macaws shed their colorful luminescent feathers on a regular basis and it is those that she drops, that I incorporate into my inlays. Yes I am recycling the parrot in the truest sense of the word.
It still baffles me, I feed her fruits, nuts, pasta.... ( by the way Kasha does not eat crusts of bread...only the inside) and she converts that nourishment into these incredible luminescent feathers....its like a magic trick.
Incorporating Kasha's feathers into the inlays of the snare drums is neither an ode or a shrine to the ever destructive bird, but merely a unique and organic opportunity to attach an identifying signature to the Snare Drums without having to screw something to the exterior of the shell.
Aloha
